The Opportunity

Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus (Advancing Justice-ALC) seeks a full-time Director of Communications to elevate and lead strategic communications and increase our impact and capacity to drive change. The Director of Communications will work closely with ALC’s leadership team to provide vision and direction for the organization’s external communication.

The Director of Communications will oversee the communications team and help design, shape, and execute a comprehensive, multi-faceted communications program throughout the organization. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Director of Communications will provide and guide the development and implementation of communications strategies, including messaging and media relations, to articulate ALC’s positions and analysis, advance our advocacy goals and elevate the organization’s visibility. We are looking for someone who is a strategic and innovative communications leader, a talented writer, and a passionate campaigner. They would bring a management style that is grounded in principles of equity and inclusion, and can partner with ALC’s leadership and staff to build connectivity and cohesion across the organization.


The Organization 

Advancing Justice – ALC is the nation’s first legal organization focusing on advancing and defending the civil rights of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (APIs). Since 1972, Advancing Justice – ALC has preserved affordable housing in San Francisco’s Chinatown, litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color. Current program areas include Housing Rights, Immigrant Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, National Security & Civil Rights, Workers’ Rights, and Voting Rights.

Advancing Justice – ALC is based in San Francisco, a hub of the Asian American rights movement, progressive politics, and social justice activism. Our location in Chinatown is the first mixed-use, affordable housing co-op in San Francisco, serving as a model for preserving affordable housing in the city and protecting tenants’ rights. 



Day-to-day activities vary in this dynamic position and include the following:

  • Develop and executive long-term and short-term communications strategy, including earned media, that raises ALC’s profile and advances our campaigns and advocacy efforts
  • Collaborate with, advise and guide program teams on messaging to shape the narrative of our campaigns, advocacy, and development efforts
  • Manage all communications and strategic messaging activities, including brand development, social media communication and crisis response
  • Oversee and manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic materials including, but not limited to, press releases, statements, op-eds, newsletters, website, and videos
  • Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable outcomes
  • Partner with the development team to maximize revenue and grow ALC’s donor base
  • Evaluate communications and efforts by documenting performance metrics, analyzing overall effectiveness and impact of communications campaigns, and refining communications efforts based on learnings
  • Effectively supervise, mentor, and lead communications team members and cultivate a culture of collaboration and growth 
  • Identify, build, and nurture strategic partnerships with ally organizations and relationships with national, regional, and state news outlets and reporters 


  • At least 8 years of experience with strategic communications, creative narratives, and generating regular earned media
  • Demonstrated track record of success creating and implementing communications strategies, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role within a complex (number and variety of constituents) nonprofit organization
  • Willingness to take risks and innovate in order to reach new audiences
  • Significant management experience
  • Highly collaborative style and history of developing strong and positive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
  • The ability to balance national and statewide strategies and perspectives while maintaining roots in local community work 
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with the ability to excel under pressure and tight timelines
  • Strong project management skills and experience managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently, including longer-term organizational campaigns
  • Strong emotional and intersectional intelligence with the ability to lead as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters


Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is based on experience and principles of internal equity. Advancing Justice-ALC offers a generous benefits package that includes full individual health, dental, and vision plan coverage, life insurance, and a 401 k plan.
