This is an exciting opportunity to lead legislative, budget, and administrative advocacy on the most pressing, cutting-edge, social justice issues impacting the AANHPI (Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander) and AMEMSA (Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian) communities, such as protecting the rights of immigrants, low-wage workers, and tenants; ensuring access to healthcare and education; and ending mass incarceration. The Sacramento Legislative Director is the lead representative in Sacramento for Asian Americans Advancing Justice – California (Advancing Justice – CA), a statewide partnership between two long-standing civil rights organizations: Advancing Justice-LA and Advancing Justice-ALC. In addition, this position would lead and manage the joint Sacramento office.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Sacramento Legislative Director will work in close coordination with relevant staff of both Advancing Justice-LA and Advancing Justice-ALC. Job responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with Advancing Justice-LA and Advancing Justice-ALC Policy Directors and other senior leaders to set legislative, administrative, and budget priorities, and implement strategies that promote organizational advocacy goals.
- Identify, monitor, and analyze legislation, administrative policy, and budgetary proposals that impact AANHPI AMEMSA and immigrant communities.
- Lead and conduct lobby visits with legislators, the Governor’s office, administrative agency representatives, staff and other advocates on priority legislation and policy proposals.
- Work with Advancing Justice-LA and Advancing Justice-ALC senior leadership and program staff to ensure mobilization of community-based organizations across the state to advance priority legislation.
- Represent AAAJ-CA in meetings of ad-hoc and long-term legislative coalitions and maintain effective relationships with coalition partners.
- Monitor legislative and budget hearings and make policy recommendations to the Executive Directors of AAAJ-LA and AAAJ-ALC and the respective organizations’ senior leadership teams.
- Prepare and deliver testimony at legislative and administrative hearings.
- Provide guidance and analysis and work with staff to develop policy reports, fact sheets, action alerts, and briefing papers to support advocacy priorities.
- Manage effective relationships with legislators, legislative staff, and professional colleagues.
- Write letters advancing the position of Advancing Justice-California on legislation, administrative policies, and budgetary proposals.
- Coordinate legislative and community policy briefings on legislative, administrative, and budgetary issues.
Experience and Education
- Four to six years of experience in legislative advocacy or working on legislative matters, preferably on civil rights or immigrant rights issues, and demonstrated leadership on policy advocacy.
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Commitment to advancing racial, social, and economic justice.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to think strategically about public policy agendas.
- Strong speaking and writing skills to present Advancing Justice-California’s policy priorities to government officials, community partners, the general public and the media.
- Capacity to integrate diverse viewpoints and experiences in building coalitions across diverse communities.
- Ability to work well both independently and in collaboration with diverse staff, organizational leaders, and community allies.
- Ability and willingness to travel to occasional meetings, including in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
- Position will be located in Sacramento, California.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time, exempt position. $80,000 to $95,000 salary range based on our salary scale which accounts for years of relevant experience and principles of internal equity. We offer a generous benefits package. Parking also is provided.
