The Opportunity

Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus (ALC) seeks a passionate and experienced advocate to lead its organization-wide community-centered advocacy efforts. The Community Advocacy Manager will lead a team of community advocates and fellows who are embedded in ALC’s six programs to execute our organizational strategies through an integrated approach of direct community engagement, strategic partnerships with base-building organizations, and coalition building to advance long-term systemic change goals.

ALC is undergoing a strategic planning process, and the candidate will play a leading role in shaping the organization's advocacy and community engagement efforts across our six issue areas. This work is fueled by our commitment to building grassroots power throughout our advocacy efforts. The ideal candidate is a movement leader who has deep experience with coalition building, campaigning and organizing/working directly with the grassroots on civil rights, economic justice, immigration or other issues, and is committed to building the leadership of impacted community members.

Working and collaborating with ALC’s leadership and program managers, the Community Advocacy Manager will oversee our work to connect grassroots efforts with mission-focused advocacy work across six programs and their respective issue areas. She/he/they should bring a management style that is grounded in principles of equity and inclusion, and can collaborate with ALC’s leadership and staff to build connectivity and cohesion across the organization. This is a new position, and will report to the Deputy Director.

The Organization

Advancing Justice – ALC is the nation’s first legal organization focusing on advancing and defending the civil rights of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). Since 1972, Advancing Justice – ALC has litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color. Current program areas include Workers’ Rights, Immigrant Rights, Housing Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, National Security & Civil Rights, and Voting Rights. A growing staff of 46 provides strong collegial support and opportunities to learn about and collaborate with other program areas. Advancing Justice - ALC is a founding member of the national Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation with partners in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C.Advancing Justice – ALC is based in San Francisco, a hub of the Asian American rights movement, progressive politics, and social justice activism. Our location in Chinatown is the first mixed-use, affordable housing co-op in San Francisco, serving as a model for preserving affordable housing in the city and protecting tenants’ rights.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic vision and direction for building ALC’s community-centered empowerment and advocacy strategies
  • Collaborate with managers across 6 programs and lead and oversee the planning, development and implementation of cohesive community engagement and partnerships
  • Work with programmatic stakeholders, including Program Managers, staff, Deputy Director and Policy Director to identify and design community-centered advocacy efforts and campaigns to accomplish broader organizational strategic priorities and systemic change goals
  • Supervise, train, and support community advocates and fellows to develop and execute projects, including but not limited to: outreach, direct engagement with impacted community members and clients, community education, developing relationships with grassroots partners, coalition building, campaigns and mobilization
  • Work with program managers to train and support Community Advocates and fellows to identify emerging issues, patterns, policy, organizing and advocacy opportunities
  • Ensure alignment and identify and develop intersectional collaboration opportunities and experiments across issue areas
  • Establish and deepen relationships with key grassroots partners, advocacy organizations and other stakeholders
  • Represent ALC and participate and/or lead in key local, state and/or national coalitions, networks and movement spaces
  • Assist in development activities such as grant proposals, reporting, funder meetings, and fundraising events
  • All ALC staff are expected to participate in regular check-in meetings with their supervisor/supervisees, staff meetings, team meetings, and other organization meetings, as required.


  • Strong passion for and commitment to social justice
  • Experience working with low-income AAPI, Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) and/or other immigrant communities
  • Minimum 5 (five) years experience with grassroots organizing, coalition building, campaigning and/or policy advocacy
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
  • Demonstrated commitment to building power for and with grassroots, directly impacted communities
  • A trusted colleague who works effectively within a nonprofit management team towards organizational goals and objectives
  • Willingness to take risks and innovate
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience supervising staff and managing a team
  • Ability to do long-term visioning and planning, and ability to grow a team while maintaining culture
  • Non-English language skills (Spanish, Arabic, or Asian languages) a plus but not required
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, facilitation, and interpersonal skills

Compensation and Benefits

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position. Salary is based on years of relevant experience and principles of internal equity. Starting salary for a Community Advocacy Manager is $95,000 - $127,762 per year.
