The Opportunity

Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus (Advancing Justice-ALC) seeks to fill a new Director of Institutional Partnerships position. This role will play a key internal leadership role in Advancing Justice- ALC’s development efforts to ensure resources through institutional funders. The Director position will lead strategy and execution of all grant applications, proposals and reporting, as well as assess the funding landscape for new institutional prospects. The ability to connect with the mission, vision, and values of Advancing Justice-ALC is vital; familiarity with the issues we work on is a plus. This position calls for a highly organized development professional with a passion for building relationships and excellent communication skills. We seek a highly resourceful team leader who brings a management style that is grounded in principles of equity and inclusion, and can partner with ALC’s leadership and staff to build connectivity and cohesion across the organization. This position reports to the Development Director.

The Organization

Advancing Justice – ALC is the nation’s first legal organization focusing on advancing and defending the civil rights of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). Since 1972, Advancing Justice – ALC has litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color. Current program areas include Workers’ Rights, Immigrant Rights, Housing Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, National Security & Civil Rights, and Voting Rights. A growing staff of more than 50 provides strong collegial support and opportunities to learn about and collaborate with other program areas.


Day-to-day activities in this dynamic position include:

  • Lead and provide oversight on foundation and government grants contracts and process, including tracking and ensuring quality of all grant proposal and report submissions, approving proposals and reports, improving and implementing foundation and government grants systems and processes
  • Lead the planning of meetings with institutional funders and guide relationship management of funders and government funding agencies in partnership with the Development Director
  • Review, edit, and finalize grant proposals and reports working with internal stakeholders for the successful completion and submission of grant proposals and reports.
  • Partner with the Development Director and Executive Director on cultivation and solicitation of grants. Provide strategic leadership on positioning ALC for successful grant renewals.
  • Work with the Legal Operations Manager and other staff to ensure the collection of relevant program data
  • Oversee the development of budgets and financial reports with the Finance Team and ensure financial accountability in the grants process
  • Identify and research funding opportunities, determine prospective funders’ giving priorities, and assess fit in line with the organization’s programmatic goals
  • Oversee internal operations on foundation and government grants, develop systems to streamline and strengthen processes and oversee implementation
  • Manage and supervise development staff working on foundation and government grants, including the Development Manager, the Grants and Administrative Manager, and the Grant Writer and Content Specialist
  • Provide strategic thought partnership and support to the Development Director on executing the long-term agency fundraising plan


  • BA or BS preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of broad development experience and a proven track record of fundraising success.
  • Ability to assess fundraising needs and activities, and plan a long-term fundraising strategy.
  • Strong staff and volunteer management skills.
  • Experience with fundraising events, donor solicitation and cultivation strategies, direct mail, and social media required.
  • Experience with foundation and government grants writing and management.
  • Strong planning and project management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention-to-details.
  • Expertise with Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), fundraising and project management software such as MobileCause, Asana, and Salesforce.
  • Ability to work with sensitive and confidential material.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to make effective and persuasive verbal and written presentations to volunteers, staff, sector peers, board members, donors, and others.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with others at all levels within and outside the organization.
  • Some travel and flexibility in working hours for donor events are required.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position. The annual compensation depends on years of relevant management experience; the range, starting from $125,000 -$167,990.
