The Opportunity

Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus (ALC) seeks a dynamic, team-oriented professional to join our operations team. The Legal Operations Manager will have a dynamic and critical role at ALC, working on various administrative, operations and logistical needs across the organization to support our legal programs serving low-income, immigrant API communities on a variety of issues. The Legal Operations Manager will also serve as the liaison with and support the engagement of pro bono attorneys and volunteers in ALC’s legal work. This position is new, will supervise 2-5 legal assistants and receptionist/intake coordinator and will work in our San Francisco office

Under the supervision of the Director of Human Resources and Administration, the Legal Operations Manager will be responsible for developing and managing internal operational processes and practices to maintain and improve the day-to-day efficiency and effectiveness of ALC’s legal programs. The ideal candidate for the role has significant experience doing administrative and operations work for law firms and/or non-profits, is a clear and patient communicator, is organized, self-motivated and works well with diverse teams.

The Organization

ALC is the nation’s first legal organization focusing on advancing and defending the civil rights of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). Since 1972, ALC has litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color. Current program areas include Workers’ Rights, Immigrant Rights, Housing Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, National Security & Civil Rights, and Voting Rights. A growing staff of over 50 provides strong collegial support and opportunities to learn about and collaborate with other program areas. ALC is based in San Francisco, a hub of the Asian American rights movement, progressive politics, and social justice activism.


Legal Operations

  • Responsible for the overall operations to support ALC’s legal work which includes direct services, clinics and impact litigation across the organization, and oversee the logistics and workflow with staff and volunteers in remote and on-site locations
  • Engage and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including Deputy Director, Litigation Director, program and admin teams, finance, and technology vendors, to identify and implement processes and workflows to improve efficiency and operational excellence in providing legal services and in our impact litigation work, including language access
  • Work with managers and staff to revise, develop, and ensure compliance with policies, workflows, procedures and trainings related to our provision of legal services to our clients and client communities
  • Implement and oversee document management and filing system, and maintain quality control systems to ensure proper record and data keeping
  • Oversee legal case management system and other technology, including managing software, training and assisting staff with software troubleshooting and acting as primary liaison with vendors
  • Supervise legal assistants to ensure smooth support to legal teams, including but not limited to: intake and client management, maintaining case documents and data, and preparing, mailing, printing, filing and service of legal documents
  • Train administrative, legal and program staff on internal procedures and ensure compliance
  • Produce regularly scheduled and requested legal data reports for programmatic analysis and compliance controls
  • Manage all legal subscriptions, software, and accounts

Pro Bono & Volunteer Management (20%)

  • Work collaboratively and effectively with Litigation Director, Development Director, Senior Counsel, attorneys, legal assistants, and other staff to identify pro bono needs and coordinate requests
  • Lead the recruitment, orientation and ongoing engagement of volunteers and pro bono attorneys and firms to support ALC’s legal work
  • Act as primary contact with bar associations, pro bono law firms and other legal organizations


  • Minimum four (4) years’ relevant experience, preferably some in a legal aid, law firm or legal non-profit setting
  • Deep commitment to social justice and to serving low-income Asian, Pacific Islanders, immigrants and other underserved communities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Self-starter with proven ability to achieve results and work independently
  • Strong computer and technology skills, including experience with Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Excel, Adobe, Google Suite and preferably legal case management software such as Clio
  • Quick learner who is able to break down and translate technology instructions to other staff in simple language
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize time-sensitive tasks

Salary and Benefits

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position. The annual compensation depends on years of relevant experience, the range is $64,000 to $83,505. ALC offers an additional $1,000 annual compensation for proficiency in a language other than English and an additional $1,000 annual compensation for graduate degree(s).
