The Opportunity

The Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation immediately seeks a part-time Voting Rights Data Analyst. This position reports to the Director of Affiliation Voting Rights Strategy and takes project direction from the Data Analytics Manager.

The Organization

Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus (Advancing Justice-ALC) will house this position. Advancing Justice-ALC is the nation’s first legal organization to focus on promoting and defending Asian Americans' and Pacific Islanders’ civil rights. Since 1972, Advancing Justice – ALC has litigated high-profile civil rights cases, advocated for the passage of landmark policy changes, and provided an array of services, including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation, to further the rights of low-income immigrants and communities of color. Current program areas include Voting Rights, Workers’ Rights, Immigrant Rights, Housing Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, and National Security & Civil Rights. A growing staff of 45+ provides strong collegial support and opportunities to learn about and collaborate with other program areas.

Advancing Justice-ALC works in affiliation with Advancing Justice partner organizations in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. to increase voting rights advocacy, including litigation, in strategically selected Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities across the country and to support statewide voting rights advocacy in California.


Day-to-day activities vary in this dynamic position and include the following:

  • Conducting quantitative (70%) and qualitative (30%) research in support of advocacy and litigation related to voting rights, including language access and redistricting, and other issues.
  • Cleaning, merging, analyzing, and visualizing Census demographic data, election results data, and other administrative datasets.
  • Learning and applying different statistical methods such as ecological inference to support racial gerrymandering advocacy and litigation.
  • Assisting in designing quasi-experiments and analyzing experimental results.


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in statistics, economics, mathematics, public policy (quantitative) or similar field; or demonstrated work experience in similar fields.
  • Current Master’s students are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience conducting quantitative research and data analysis.
  • Strong quantitative skills and ability to work with large data sets.
  • Proficiency in R or Python is required.
  • Familiarity with Census data preferred.
  • Ability to learn and apply different statistical methods.
  • Demonstrated interest in and/or commitment to social justice.

Salary and Benefits: This is a temporary, non-exempt position for a limited 3-month term with a possibility of extension. Flexible hours and compensation are to be determined at the time of hiring. No benefits are included.
