Breaking Patterns and Meeting Needs: A Q&A on Community Safety
ALC’s criminal justice reform program to provides legal and advocacy services to low-income, immigrant Asian, Pacific Islander, Arab, and Middle Eastern communities in San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Mateo counties. Today, the six member-team is helping people recover from harm, feel safer, and prevent the harm from happening again, including through a new free legal clinic that provides culturally-sensitive services for victims and survivors of violence in the languages they use. We talked to program manager Carl Takei about how these experiences and his own family history have shaped his approach to community lawyering.

Jose Ruben Hernandez Gomez has filed a federal administrative complaint to seek accountability for the physical and mental trauma, medical negligence, abuse, and coercion he survived this spring at the hands of ICE officers and medical staff. In February 2023, Mr. Hernandez Gomez and dozens of other people detained at Mesa Verde and Golden State Annex launched a 35-day hunger strike to peacefully protest inhumane conditions. They endured unconstitutional retaliation and violent tactics from ICE officers and the GEO Group employees seeking to break the strike.
