On November 20, 2014, President Obama announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will develop an application process for undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and for undocumented parents of lawful permanent residents (LPRs) to apply and be protected temporarily from deportation. President Obama also announced an expansion of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for individuals who came to the United States as children. These parents and other individuals may be granted a type of temporary permission to stay in the U.S. called “deferred action.” These programs are expected to help about 5 million people.
