National Asian Americans Advancing Justice Affiliation
We are working closely with Advancing Justice partners in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. to strengthen and elevate a national API voice for civil rights. We work with our Advancing Justice partners to identify key areas of national concern where we can effectively play a leadership role. Below are just a few of the areas where we have begun to work together.
Islamophobia. We aim to address the overt rise in anti-immigrant and anti-refugee discrimination, as well as a rise in Islamophobia that impacts all those perceived to be Muslim. In April, we co-hosted a convening for regional, state, and national advocates in Washington DC to develop a shared understanding of the threats posed by the anti-immigrant, anti-refugee, and Islamophobia movements, and will continue to discuss concrete ways to work together across movements to address these issues.
Affirmative Action. We are also co-counsel with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights that has been granted amicus plus status in the affirmative action case against Harvard. We support a holistic admissions process that takes race into consideration as one of many factors.
Profiling of Asian American Scientists. There have been at least 4 federal prosecutions for espionage in the past 18 months against Chinese scientists that have been found to be baseless and were eventually dropped. We have issued FOIA requests to the government and continue to call for a federal investigation into why the government appears to be targeting this community. For more information, please visit this website, Scientists Not Spies.
