Asian Americans Advancing Justice Stands With Impacted Communities As Supreme Court Hears Oral Arguments in Muslim Ban Case, Trump v. Hawaii
Washington, DC – Today, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Trump v. Hawaii, which is challenging the third version of the Trump Administration’s executive order known as the Muslim Ban. When President Trump first proposed the Muslim Ban as a centerpiece of his administration, people from around the country came together to oppose the racist, Islamophobic executive order. Since that time, the Muslim Ban has faced a series of legal challenges. Ultimately the Muslim Ban was allowed to take full effect while the Supreme Court prepares to make its final ruling.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice, an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, releases the following statement:
“We are proud to stand in solidarity with communities affected by the Muslim Ban at the #NoMuslimBanEver rally today. Since its first iteration, the Trump Administration’s Muslim Ban has been challenged in the courts and in the streets.
Asian Americans are no strangers to racist and discriminatory policies. Our country has a history of using national origin as a means of scapegoating minority communities, including the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the unjust incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. This is a chapter of our shared history that the Trump Administration shamefully perpetuates in supporting the Muslim Ban. We must ensure that we are not repeating the mistakes of our past. That is why Advancing Justice joined the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality and children of those who challenged the WWII Japanese American incarceration in filing a Supreme Court amicus brief.
We continue to defend and protect communities around the world who have been affected by this Muslim Ban. We will continue to march with those who stand up to these types of discriminatory policies. We stand with our Muslim brothers and sisters and strongly declare: #NoMuslimBanEver.”
